House of Fraser - Wonderland Shoot

It is always exciting to work on a job for a high profile client like House of Fraser, who trusted us with their all important Christmas 2010 brochure shoot.

The concept at heart was a simple one. The word Wonderland formed out of life size letters with people and products interacting with each other. The letters and models were shot on a previous occasion leaving the products to be shoot and cut out ready to be dropped into the main image. The fun part was shooting the products so they appeared huge, making a pair of cufflinks look knee high! They also had to be draped around the letters, balancing  on top, or poking out from behind.

One of the main challenges involved was replicating the lighting and getting it spot on so the products looked as if they had been shot alongside the models and letters at the same time. For this to be convincing, we had to know exactly where each product would appear in the layout.

For the teddy bear, for instance, we created the same angle as the letter it was going to sit on, from a piece of card. Once the shot was looking right, we brought the teddy image into the file with the letters and the models in Photoshop, to check for accuracy of both angle and light. It is details like this that can make all the difference in making something look convincing.

The same was true of the necklace. Not only did we have to get it to hang in a natural way which interacted with the letters, we also had to make it look fantastic and ensure it sparkled! After all, the whole purpose of the exercise was to show off some great products in an interesting and different way.

Product photography can achieve some fantastic results if done in the right way. As you can see with this job, the concept was excellent. It was glamourous and yet managed to keep the viewer focused on the merchandise.
